   When you get your domain name, don't just register the first thing that comes to mind... think about it for a while and make sure that it accurately describes what the website is about, or use your business name if possible. This helps people browsing through search engines find what they are looking for easier, and makes your site more memorable.  You should choose a few names along the lines you are thinking of, as odds are, that your number 1 choice is already in use.

Marketing your site:

  After you have created your site, set up your e-mail accounts, and are ready for business... it is time to get the word out. The methods for marketing your site are many, and will take time, money, and patience. It can take up to three months to get your website to show up in the search engines at all, after submitting.

   Spam is an UNACCEPTABLE form of marketing, as it is harassing to the person receiving the unrequested advertisements... of which they have to sort through to get to the wanted information in their mailbox 10 times longer than they should need to. It is annoying, unethical, and just wrong. Most of all, it just doesn't work!

  The best way to market your business or website is to spread by word of mouth... a good product will expose itself naturally. This will take time though. To get traffic from people surfing the web, you will need to get yourself listed with the major search engines; yahoo, Google.com, Aol / the open directory project, Lycos, and hotbot. Beware of paid listing services that push the line "Submitted to over 1,000 engines for only $?.??" - as a seasoned webmaster, I can tell you only the major search engines matter. These are the top 10, some of which I listed above. These engines periodically "spider" the web, meaning they hit every vein of the net they can, indexing and archiving the information they collect.

    These can later be found by web surfers who enter in keywords into the engine. The best way to make your site stand above all the rest (besides having a catchy top level domain name - which is also helpful for the friendly search engine spider to find your site; some engines do not follow piggyback domains.) is to have a special header tag at the top of the html in your pages. This tag is called META. This helps the spiders read your site and more accurately index it in such a way as to pull it closer to the top of the results page. One value is "keywords" after which you should list all terms you can think of that are specific to your site. The words that stand out... what would you enter if you were searching for your own site? Another value for META is "description". This is what shows up under your link in the results page, to entice the user to click to your site instead of the ones surrounding it. All other smaller search engines get their information from the top 10.
